Toilet Accidents That You Need to Know About

You would be surprised, if you ever read an insurance company’s statistics for accidents that happen in your bathroom. You would even be more surprised, if I was to tell you about the accidents that happen while someone is using the toilet, before someone uses the toilet or after someone uses the toilet.

One of the biggest problems involving your bathroom toilet is going to involve young men who are barely tall enough to use the toilet. Try to imagine a young boy between the ages of four and six years old who is using the toilet with the toilet seat lifted up as the unsuspecting young man, starts to notice the toilet seat falling down onto his private area. Ouch, that’s got to hurt.

You probably haven’t ever heard of this one, but toilets have actually been known to collapse as the weight of its patron is too much for it to bear. Something like this actually happened in my home. One of our guests who was a large man needed to use our bathroom, when all of a sudden I heard something break. It wasn’t the toilet bowl, but it was the toilet seat and it had broken into two pieces. I could only imagine the damage that the toilet seat would have done, if it would have broken into a few more pieces.

The Contractor Forgot the Toilet

This might not happen that often, but when it does, it can be a remodeling nightmare for the contractor and the owners of the property. Get ready for a story that might just knock your socks off.

I only heard the story, and cannot verify it, but it goes something like this. A bathroom remodeling contractor was remodeling a bathroom in a home that had six bathrooms. There were only two people living in the house, and the bathroom that they were remodeling was rarely used.

The bathroom floor needed to be jack hammered, so that the plumbing could be relocated and that’s where the problem began. The plumber forgot to install the toilet plumbing and when the building inspector came out to the house, he couldn’t find the bathroom that they were working on, because the house was too big.

He left a note for the contractor that somehow, fell off of the clipboard and the next day when the contractor’s workers showed up on the job, they assumed that the building inspector had approved everything. That’s when they poured the concrete and the rest of the problem just seemed to escalate from there.

Believe it or not, the bathroom was completely finished and the contractor was paid in full for the work they had finished. The contractor asked the homeowners if they could call the building department and get final inspection so that he wouldn’t have to waste his time dealing with the building inspector.

When the homeowners called the building department, this is when they received the bad news. The building inspector had never signed off the rough plumbing and they should have never finished the bathroom.

Since this bathroom was rarely used and the homeowners rarely had time to walk around their home, the building inspector informed them that they were missing their toilet pipes and that he left a note on the clipboard, the day of the last inspection.

It cost the general contractor a few thousand dollars to make everything right and the moral to this story is don’t forget to hook the toilet pipes up or you could find yourself up to your knees in do do.

Reading this article, you probably think stuff like this doesn’t happen, but the reality is that it happens more than you think. I will continue writing articles with more stories like these so stay tuned and keep reading.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Suggestions

One of the primary decisions you must build if you are going to renovate your bathroom is if to use a professional or not. Making an informed choice is vital. Let’s cast some light on this topic. You’ll have a lot of options to consider. Planning your project is the first step.

Let’s start with a few straightforward questions and the first would be do you consider yourself incredibly handy when it comes to projects, a little handy, or do you fall into the final group of “not a chance?” No matter how handy you are there are answers for all skill levels.

If you’re good at doing projects around the house, then most likely you will do ok. You may have the skills to embark upon some of the tougher projects like finishing renovation or rearranging the floor plan. Replacing the shower stall is one more idea. You could even go with an open shower with no doors.

If you have at least a mid level skill level you shouldn’t have too many problems. Try changing out the sink fixtures. Another project that is simpler than you may think is installing a new mirror. Changing out the floor could be an idea worth considering if you have someone with you who might be able to help.

Often times, taking out the old flooring is more difficult than putting down the new. A more tough style of flooring to put in is linoleum. It comes in a roll so you will be doing lots of measuring and cutting. Self stick tiles are easier to put in. Mistakes are pretty simple to fix.

If you only have a basic skill level, you will have to employ a professional. How do you find a dependable contractor? Perhaps your family or friends had some labor done recently. Ask them to refer their contractor to you
